What happens before birds lay eggs?
For fertilization to occur, the female must have been mated with a male prior to having the ovarian follicle ovulate the egg into the oviduct. The male's sperm hang out in the oviduct for several days, waiting to encounter a developing ovum, before they die off.
Nests are places where birds can lay eggs and raise their young ones. Nests also help the birds avoid predators and create a better shelter.
One of the triggers for egg laying is the ability to feed any young that might emerge from the eggs. If there is a diet that is rich in nutrients (as would be available in the wild after a rain event, warm temperatures or during longer days) then birds will be more prone to becoming reproductively active.
Egg incubation is the process by which an egg, of oviparous (egg-laying) animals, develops an embryo within the egg, after the egg's formation and ovipositional release.

When the birds have finished building their nest, this is when they mate and lay their eggs. Mating can take days, weeks, or months. The female will lay between one and six eggs, depending on the species. It can also take weeks before all eggs are laid.
Back to our original question: with amniotic eggs showing up roughly 340 million or so years ago, and the first chickens evolving at around 58 thousand years ago at the earliest, it's a safe bet to say the egg came first. Eggs were around way before chickens even existed.
Some birds nest in trees, bushes, the ground, or nest boxes; on balconies or cliffs; under bridges, and many more places. For example: Ovenbirds create their nests in the ground (they look like a Dutch oven β with a side entrance).
For an egg to develop normally, it must be exposed for a considerable length of time to temperatures a few degrees below the normal 104 degrees F (40 degrees C) avian body temperature. Indeed, the ideal incubation temperature for many birds' eggs is about human body temperature, 98.6 degrees F.
Unwanted egg laying is a common problem for pet birds. This happens when a pet bird not meant for breeding or production and often without a mate begins egg-laying activity. This is most common with cockatiels but can occur in other species.
Do birds lay eggs immediately?
Virtually all songbirds lay one egg per day, usually in the early morning, until the clutch is complete. In some larger species the female will lay an egg only once every 2β3 days. You can find out the clutch sizes for many North American species in our All About Birds species guide.

If all goes well, the sperm penetrate through the wall of the ovum (egg) and fertilization takes place. During the first stage of embryonic development, the egg shell develops; pigments are added last. Ovulation and laying take about 24 hours, so female birds typically produce at most one egg per day.
egg: unborn stage. larva: young stage -- this is when most of the feeding is done. pupa: inactive (no feeding) stage between larva and adult stages. adult: final, breeding stage.
Although birds' eggs appear to be fragile, they are in fact extremely robust. The oval shape applies the same rules of engineering as an arched bridge; the convex surface can withstand considerable pressure without breaking. This is essential if the egg is not to crack under the weight of the sitting bird.
The time for incubation varies widely from species to species. Roughly speaking, small songbirds take between 10 days and 2 weeks to hatch and the same amount to fledge. Larger birds such as woodpeckers may take 3 weeks to a month to fledge.
In Generations II, III and VII, Egg cycles are 256 steps long. In Generation IV, Egg cycles are 255 steps long. In Generations V and VI, Egg cycles are 257 steps long.
When a fledgling or juvenile has finished growing it becomes a mature or adult bird. An adult bird attracts a mate, builds a nest and raises young to start the cycle all over again. Some birds migrate or travel long distances as part of their life cycle. Other birds stay in one area throughout the seasons.
But how long does it take Mom to lay an egg once her first yolk has been fertilized? The short answer: approximately two days (48-50 hours). It goes through a lot of changes along the way! Note that our oviduct times were derived using the ratio between bald eagles (~48 hours) and domestic chickens (~25 hours).
For birds like Baltimore orioles, bluebirds and rose-breasted grosbeaks, this happens typically between two and three weeks old. Some big birds, like owls, hawks and eagles, develop much more slowly. Bald eagles will stay in the nest up to 98 days!
